O&R Powers Up Hundreds of Customers by Unveiling Largest Single Electric Vehicle Charging Project in Company History

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) continues to accelerate electric vehicle charging infrastructure growth in the Hudson Valley, announcing the largest single application EV charging project in O&R’s service territory.

In partnership with Powerup EV Solutions, a leading provider of EV charging solutions for commercial properties, O&R has officially energized 120 Level 2 light-duty chargers at The Gardens at Palisades condominium complex in Pomona.

The project was made possible through O&R’s PowerReady Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program, which offers incentives that offset up to 100 percent of the electric infrastructure costs associated with installing Level 2 or direct-current fast chargers (DCFC) for EVs.

“The PowerReady program has allowed O&R to support the widespread implementation of EV charging infrastructure throughout our entire service area,” said Brendan Gallagher, O&R E-Mobility clean energy manager, who oversees the company’s PowerReady program. “We are proud to accommodate the charging needs of existing EV owners at The Gardens at Palisades, but to also provide motivation to prospective EV buyers who reside at the complex.”

“This project serves as a powerful demonstration of the critical importance of EV charging infrastructure in advancing sustainable transportation,” said Powerup EV Solutions founder and CEO Jake Berdugo. “The request to install EV charges at The Gardens at Palisades rapidly transformed into a successful reality thanks to our collaborative efforts with O&R’s E-Mobility team, who has consistently demonstrated its leadership in green energy and sustainability.”

New York State launched the PowerReady initiative in 2020 and is the largest light-duty EV charging infrastructure program in the country. It will provide up to $585 million of customer incentives, with a goal of supporting about 25,000 charging plugs. These chargers are in diverse locations, including near apartment buildings, retail locations, workplaces, on street curbs, and at public fast-charging hubs.

O&R’s PowerReady program launched in the summer of 2020 with a $43 million budget to install approximately 1,546 charging stations in the service territory. In March 2024, O&R became the first utility in the state to contract 100 percent of the company’s Level 2 charger installation target.

With the completion of charger installation at The Gardens at Palisades, O&R now projects that the remaining 754 contracted Level 2 chargers will be energized by 2027. These chargers, a total of 32 projects, will be constructed at various locations throughout Orange and Rockland counties, including 13 projects in disadvantaged communities.
